The Story of Disco Dance Club
My name is Deaba, founder of the Disco Dance Club. I have been catering for functions such as weddings, birthday parties, dinner parties etc. for about 12 years. I own Deaba’s Catering & Foods – a fusion of African, European, and Asian foods, for which I am quite renowned with some high-profile clients.
Why did I start the Disco Dance Club?
My two passions are Cooking and Dancing.
I am over 60 years old and enjoyed the Disco era and did a lot of clubbing then. Ageing has not diminished my passion for dancing. Dancing to Disco music gives me the most pleasure. At my age, I realised there were not many places one could go and let their hair down and dance like no one is watching. Going to regular nightclubs, I have felt uneasy and sometimes shy – and it is not the same. There is more drinking in nightclubs than dancing. Talking to people (over 40s) I realised there were many like myself wanting to dance and we still can dance. I decided to create an environment that is not crowded, spacious, provides seating for individuals to catch their breath in between dancing, and an opportunity to meet and socialise with like minds.
I decided to do the next best thing – start a Disco Dance Club for people like me to enjoy dancing again in the comfort of a regular venue and make dancing come first. To create my own sunshine.
What better to compliment this than my passion for cooking You not only come to dance and energise, but you also get to enjoy some delicious hot and cold foods by Deaba’s Catering.
The pandemic and lockdown days exercised my mind. And what best to release all the tensions of the lockdown than to dance. When to start the project became a challenge, due to the fear and panic. We were supposed to maintain social distancing, how can you ask people to come and dance together. This is still a challenge.
In November 2021 we decided to take the bull by the horns and the Disco Dance Club was born, officially opened by Councillor Jane Cooper, the former Mayor of Wandsworth. The numbers were encouraging, and I could see the joy and exhilaration and I was ecstatic, having lifted it off the ground.
The DJ plays the original Disco music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s – not synthetized. Music that will be familiar to the over 40s, and anyone with a passion for dancing to disco music is welcome.
The disco sessions run so far have been a great hit and our numbers are growing steadily. The feedback has been fantastic.
